ARCHIVED - Adapted drones to inspect Lorca sewer system
The drones will be able to reach locations which are more difficult for operatives to acess and will greatly decrease the cost and time needed to carry out the inspection
Aguas de Lorca, the concessionary which manages water and sewage networks in the Lorca municipality, will be using specially adapted drones to carry out inspections of the sewer system in the municipality, which has over 1,100 kilometres of pipes.
The use of drones will allow even the most remote parts of the sewer system to be inspected and, in addition, the time needed to carry out the inspection will be greatly reduced, as will the planning time, as the extended bureaucratic processes which must be followed in order to obtain authorization to enter dangerous places will no longer be required.
The cost of inspecting confined spaces will therefore be less, and the concessionary can cover a wider area using the technology.
Furthermore, this technological advancement will greatly improve the safety of the workers in charge of inspecting the network, as entering the sewers comes with several risks, including lack of oxygen and the presence of harmful gases.
The purpose of the drones is to carry out a routine inspection to check on the general status of the sewerage system and check for any damages in the pipes, as well as to make sure that heavy rains have not caused any build-ups of waste.
The drones have been specially adapted for the task and are enveloped in a ball of wire caging to prcent them being dmaged as they fly through the confined and enclosed spaces within the sewage network.
