Covid has changed so many aspects of our daily lives, and last summer the caravanning and motorhoming sector received an unexpected boost due to the desire of many families to control their holiday space and find ways in which to enjoy a holiday without being put at risk of contamination from covid. As a result, caravans, motorhomes, camping parks and rural lets were extremely popular, and even though the tourism sector is working hard to convince holidaymakers that their establishments are safe, the camping and caravanning sector foresees a period of growth.
With this in mind, Caravaca de la Cruz, in the north-west of the Murcia region, is planning to construct a new motorhome area alongside the Recinto Ferial area on the outskirts of the town, aiming to create a new facility which will bring more camper tourism to the municipality.
Those of us who have travelled in camper vans for any period know that the availability of safe areas (and reasonably-priced areas) in which to park is crucial when making decisins about travelling in a country or area and is often the deciding factor in how long is spent in a particular area (and how much money is spent in that area).
Inland areas of the Murcia region (and indeed of all Mediterranean coastal regions) have to work much harder if they are to attract visitors from outside of their regions, as the assumption that the whole world knows about their municipalities and points of local interest is sadly, completely inaccurate.
Tourism councillors tend to forget that travellers have the whole world from which to choose a destination and that making noise outside of their local area is fundamental, as well as providing facilities that are worth travelling for, if they are to attract tourists and the revenue they bring.
During covid the tourism sector has turned inwards and is only thinking local and this summer for example, the international market is being totally neglected and ignored as councils scrabble for those national tourists willing to travel this summer within Spain.
Hopefully, further projects such as this will be scheduled for the coming months, looking beyond the current crisis and the needs of local businesses to attract tourists post-covid.
And hopefully, tourism councillors might start to understand that there’s no point building something and then not telling your potential market that it exists, a fundamental error that leads to many tourism facilities failing to be the success they could have been!
