The emblematic Torre del Oro was constructed by the Almohad governor of Seville in 1220-1221, Abu i-Ulá, during the period of the Almohad Caliphate, to control the access to Seville from the Guadalquivir river and was originally one of two parallel fortifications.
It was given its name as originally the materials used to construct it ( mortar, lime and pressed hay) created a golden shimmer to its image as seen on the surface of the river.
Although damaged in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, it remains an emblematic structure and one of the most instantly recognisable military buildings in Sevilla.
