ARCHIVED - 12,000 free plants to beautify small towns and villages in Huelva
Huelva provincial council is helping beautify small towns and villages by handing out 12,000 seasonal plants for their parks and gardens.
The region of Andalucía is known for its natural beauty, and colourful plants are part of every picture postcard view.
But growing plants for public areas is a huge task and not every municipality has either the capability or the financial capacity to run its own municipal facilities, so the eight provincial diputations of the Andalucía region each runs provincial greenhouse facilities from which they are able to distribute plants to local councils.
Under the 2021 seasonal plant campaign in Huelva, municipalities with fewer than 20,000 residents can apply to receive between 150 and 250 plants from the provincial plant nurseries, depending on their population size.
Once their applications are approved, councils can choose from eight varieties of five different plants including verbenas, Chinese carnations, marigolds and coreopsis.
The campaign aims to support councils and help them maintain their green areas and public buildings to improve their environments and boost residents’ quality of life while also contributing to meeting Sustainable Development Goals 13 (climate action) and 15 (life of terrestrial ecosystems).
