ARCHIVED - 27-storey block of flats in Benidorm evacuated after fire
The blaze broke out on the seventh floor of a multi-storey block of flats in the Marina Baixa town, Alicante province
Fifty residents were forced to flee their homes after a blaze on the seventh floor of a 27-storey block of flats in Benidorm.
The Provincial Fire Consortium of Alicante received a call reporting smoke and flames coming from one of the flats at the Coblanca residential building in Calle Murtal at 9.43pm on Thursday November 11, and a crew of six firefighters with two pumps and ladder were sent to the scene.
As a precautionary measure and to avoid toxic poisoning, the whole building was evacuated as smoke could be seen billowing from the seventh floor apartment windows.
To put out the fire, firefighters used the dry column technique typically used in multi-storey buildings, in which a pipe with connections on different floors is installed so that water can be transported without losing pressure on the higher floors.
Once the flames were extinguished, firefighters ventilated the building to dissipate the "large amount of black smoke". No injuries have been reported but the flat was completely destroyed in the blaze, the cause of which has not been disclosed.
