ARCHIVED - 30 migrants rescued off the coast of Malaga
Men, women and one child were aboard the dingy headed for Andalucía
Maritime emergency services rescued a total of 30 irregular immigrants just 40 miles southeast of Malaga over the weekend.
The Salvamento Maritimo rescue authorities received notification at around 9.30pm that a migrant boat had been spotted sailing from the Bay of Alhucemas towards the Andalucían coast, and the Helimer 222 helicopter and the Salvamar Alnitak vessel were deployed to rescue the migrants.
Just after midnight, the boat was located close to Malaga carrying 27 men, two women and one child, all of North African origin. Emergency personnel began the delicate operation of transferring the migrants back to shore and they all reached the Port of Malaga safely at 5am.
Unfortunately, a boat-load of irregular immigrants heading for the Canary didn’t have such a lucky escape on Sunday May 8 and at least 44 people lost their lives when the dingy capsized.
