ARCHIVED - 5th annual Mazarron beach clean-up day found less trash than in previous years
The clean-up, which was carried out by local school children and the Chelonia Association, removed over 150kg of waste from the Playa de Bahía
On Friday May 5, the fifth annual edition of the Mazarrón beach clean-up was organised as part of the ‘Circular Seas’ programme in collaboration with the Chelonia Association and the Coca-Cola Foundation.
This is a network project promoted by Coca-Cola in Spain and Portugal for the cleaning of coasts, aquatic environments and seabeds, as well as raising awareness of environmental issues and educating people about recycling and the promotion of circular economy.
As part of its push towards promoting more awareness of the circular economy and care for the local environmental, Mazarrón has also recently launched a campaign to educate people about recycling used cooking oil to reduce the amount of used olive oil thrown down the municipal drains.
In Mazarrón for the last five years of the beach clean-up project, the Town Council has had permanent collaborators in the form of the company Bahía de Mazarrón Ingeniería Urbana, the Club de Regatas de Mazarrón and the Red Cross. This year, 2022, the IES Antonio Hellín Costa secondary school in Puerto de Mazarrón joined the fight against climate change, with students doing their part to help clean up the municipal beaches.
The Councillor for Coastal Services, Raquel Raja, was present to thank the students and collaborating entities for their participation.
The day consisted of a series of presentations to the students of the first year of ESO at the school, in which the aim of the project was presented to make everyone aware of the importance of the conservation of beaches and seabeds.
After the talk, it was time for action, and everyone went down to the Play de Bahía beach to begin the clean-up.
About a hundred students and teachers from the school, as well as monitors from the Chelonia Association took part in the clean-up, and carried out an intense deep clean of the beach, at the same time checking what type of waste was collected and how much of it there was, all within the monitoring tasks to which this beach has been subjected for the last five years by the Chelonia Foundation as part of this programme.
The results of the collection have been satisfactory as each year the amount of waste is decreasing and this year the following quantities were collected:
Generic rubbish: 8.59 kg including cigarette butts
Plastics: 15.27 kg
Glass: 4.22 kg
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET): 0.6 kg
2 vats weighing 3.5 kg
Metal: 1.5 kg
1 informative sign weighing 120 kg
Total: 153 kg
The day ended with some downtime and snacks and refreshments handed out to all participants.
