ARCHIVED - 6 kilometres of cycle lane in La Manga improved with weather resistant paving
The cycle lane between km 7 and km 13 has been tackled first
Work to improve six kilometres of the cycle lane in La Manga del Mar Menor has concluded this week and the rest of the cycle path is expected to be finished in July, including the section located in the municipality of San Javier.
The total length of the cycle lane, which starts at "kilometre 0" of La Manga, is 18 kilometres and there are plans to pave and repaint the road markings and signage on the full length of the path as part of the ‘La Manga 365’ initiative.
A type of paving called 'slurry' pavement has been used for the bike lane with non-slip properties and offers greater resistance to ultraviolet rays and weather changes, as well as providing an improved circulation surface for low-weight vehicles such as bicycles.
Another benefit of the improved bike lane is that it is easily seen by users, as most of the route is bright blue, and some road markings on the pavement are the same color.
The project means increased safety and comfort for cyclists and the bike lane also promotes eco-friendly travel. In addition, the local council hopes that the improved cycle path will decrease the density of traffic in the area.
Around 830,000 euros have been spent on the project, 80 per cent of which has been provided by the European Fund for Regional Development (Feder), while the remaining 20 per cent has been provided by the regional government.
