ARCHIVED - 84-year-old driver dies after crash on Cartagena motorway
The man drove the wrong way down the A-30 motorway in the Region of Murcia
A crash took place on the A-30 motorway in Cartagena on Sunday morning, November 21, after an elderly driver mistakenly drove the wrong way down the motorway for five kilometres.
The driver entered the motorway at the La Palma-Los Barreros exit (kilometre 184) and continued driving for five kilometres until he eventually crashed into a another car at around 9.30am, injuring the driver.
Guardia Civil officers, Local Police officers, firefighters and emergency ambulances were all sent to the scene, near the Espacio Mediterráneo shopping centre. The 84-year-old and his passenger suffered multiple injuries and were taken to the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena while the other driver sustained only minor injuries. The elderly man later died in hospital.
Traffic was brought to a halt by the incident, but officers had fully re-established traffic flow by 12 noon.
