ARCHIVED - A weekend of Covid crime in Cartagena
More than one hundred adverse incidents were reported to Cartagena police over the weekend
The Local Police of Cartagena had an exceptionally busy weekend, having to respond to almost one hundred incidents.
Between Friday, Saturday and Sunday, officers fined individuals and groups on 15 occasions for consuming alcohol on public roads. On Friday, July 23 alone, ten sanctions were issued in the Vivero area of Cabo de Palos.
In Cartagena, two robberies were reported as well as a minor assault on a 39-year-old woman, in addition to six fines for public urination.
On Saturday, the police seized two bags containing alcoholic beverages in La Manga and responded to a complaint over late closing of a bar in Las Dunas. The Local Police also filed five complaints for Covid violations in Puerto Bello and Puerto de Levante.
While the number of fines issued and complaints responded to may appear high, the councillor for Citizen Security, Juan Pedro Torralba, insisted that the attention of the Local Police and Guardia Civil in Cartagena is having a positive effect on the crime rate. He stated that the weekend past has seen a diminished number of offences, and has appealed to the public to continue to comply with regulations both to ensure public safety and to respect the tourists who visit the area in the summer months.
Locals however, complain that the increased police presence around Las Dunas has simply pushed the teenage drinkers out further along the coastline.
