ARCHIVED - African coral, plant of the month at Malaga’s fabulous botanical gardens
The Jardín Botánico La Concepción, just north of Málaga city in Andalusia, is a beautiful place for a day out and even dogs are welcome!
Erythrina caffra, the coast coral or African coral tree, has been chosen as the Jardín Botánico La Concepción botanical gardens in Málaga’s plant of the month for April. The garden’s African coral can be found in the African area of the gardens’ "Round the World in 80 Trees" area.
Named for the colour of their flowers, which are generally a strong orangey scarlet tone similar to coral, the stunning trees produce large flowers that offer appear before the leaves do, making them even more eye-catching and also meaning they are long-lasting, appearing in March and lasting until the beginning of summer.
The medium-sized trees are very much respected in South Africa, where they are believed to have magical properties and were often planted by Zulu chiefs’ graves.
The eye-catching flowers make African coral trees very popular as ornamental trees in parks and gardens. They grow well in warm climes, protected from strong wind and extreme cold.
Just north of Málaga city, the lovely La Concepción gardens are well worth a visit. Located at Camino del Jardín Botánico number 3, Málaga, they can be reached by tour bus or private car, or are just a 15-minute walk away from the last stop on the city’s number two bus route.
From 1 April to 30 September the gardens are open from 9.30 am to 8.30 pm, and free visits are possible on Sundays from 4.30 pm onwards.
General tickets cost 5.20 euros or 3.10 euros for students and pensioners, and children under six get in free of charge. There are various guided tour options and prices available, more about which can be found at https://laconcepcion.malaga.eu/en/
