ARCHIVED - Aguilas Carnival 2022 could be back on after being ruled out last month
The Mayor of Águilas has issued a new statement about the Carnival
A few weeks ago, following a difficult vote by the Town Hall and the Carnival organisers, the authorities made the difficult decision to cancel the 2022 Águilas Carnival due to the coronavirus pandemic, but after a second vote, the Mayor has announced that the event could be back on.
The second vote revealed that a majority were in favour of hosting the Carnival next February, leading the Mayor, Mari Carmen Moreno, to announce two different alternatives for the 2022 Carnival, although she made it clear that if the pandemic data worsens considerably in February then the event will have to be cancelled altogether.
The first option is to plan the Carnival as if the festivities were to go ahead as normal, with no Covid restrictions at all. However, this alternative is risky, as it would mean investing around 400,000 euros into the Carnival without knowing which Covid restrictions will be in place at the time.
As for the second option, only the parts of the Carnival which can be adapted to restrictions will be planned, including ceremonies in which the number of attendees can be restricted with relative ease, such as the parades and the Drag Queen Gala. However, this would mean that the performances which involve the Carnival Characters, such as the battle of Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma, cannot go ahead and the Characters would therefore be relegated to the 2023 Carnival.
The members of the Carnival associations are going to hold a meeting on Friday to decide which of the two alternatives proposed by the Mayor is the best course for their beloved festival.
