ARCHIVED - Aguilas demands better ambulance service from Region of Murcia
The Mayor has met with the regional Minister for Health to demand a solution to the problem of ambulances in the municipality
Faced with insufficient ambulances and unacceptably long waiting times, Águilas has insisted that the Ministry for Health of the Regional Government of Murcia increase their emergency medical response fleet.
The Mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, and the Councillor for Health, María Dolores García, met this morning with the Regional Minister for Health, Juan José Pedreño, who is ultimately in charge of the 061 emergency services.
At the meeting, which was also attended by the manager of 061 and the secretary general of the Ministry, “various issues of interest to the municipality have been addressed and, fundamentally, the existing problems with non-assistance ambulances.”
“In the last month,” said Mayor Moreno, “there have been numerous complaints from citizens about the insufficient ambulance service provided in Águilas, with waiting times sometimes exceeding three hours to be transferred to the hospital of reference.
“Faced with this serious problem, both the Councillor and the manager of 061 have promised to talk to the company which has the concession for the service so that Águilas will have a permanent ambulance which can carry out these transfers.
“In other words, if an ambulance has to leave for the hospital with a patient, another ambulance must come immediately to prevent the incidents recorded in recent months from happening again.”
Along with this issue, both the Mayor and the Councillor for Health have conveyed to Minister for Health Pedreño the need to bring back Águilas’s specialist consultations that were lost during the pandemic. These include cardiology, surgery, traumatology and otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose and throat medicine).
“[He] has also promised to study this situation and provide an immediate solution so that these medical specialists can return to Águilas, thus avoiding unnecessary journeys for patients from Águilas for initial consultations or check-ups,” concluded Moreno.
