ARCHIVED - Aguilas receives landmark recognition from the Spanish triathlon Federation
Over the last 32 years Águilas has become one of the most important triathlon venues in Spain
The municipality of Águilas, in the south-west of the Region of Murcia, has a long tradition of hosting and supporting gruelling triathlon athletics events, and this commitment to the discipline has been recognized by the award of a silver medal by the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI).
Águilas thus becomes the first municipality in the whole of Spain to receive such an award, and Mayoress Mari Carmen Moreno was delighted to receive the medal from the president of the Federation, José Hidalgo at a ceremony at the Town Hall. According to Sr Hidalgo, it is only fitting that Águilas should be the first to receive this recognition after the 32 years of support it has given to one of the newer athletic disciplines.
On behalf of the Town Hall, Councillor Cristóbal Casado underlined the important economic benefits to Águilas of hosting prestigious triathlon events, explaining that the last Copa del Rey y la Reina competition brought about economic activity of over 1.2 million euros, an important boost to the town outside the main summer tourist season.
This year Águilas will host the national Triathlon Sprint Championship and the Spanish Inclusive Triathlon event.
