ARCHIVED - Airlines offer cheap flights to Spain and Europe in September
The increased demand for flights has caused a ‘price war’ resulting in cheaper travel
The coronavirus pandemic has undoubtedly been one of the worst crises to hit the airline sector in history, but with international travel opening up and the global vaccination campaign approaching its culmination, tour operators are taking advantage of demand and vying for customers by launching cut-price flights in September to Spain and much of Europe.
After months which saw several companies fold and even more forced to take bail-out deals, the sector already showed signs of recovery in Spain before the summer, with the number of workers on furlough reduced by 70 per cent in April. In the rest of Europe, air traffic increased to 65 per cent of the figure recorded in the same month in 2019, while it jumped to 71 per cent in August, according to air traffic manager Eurocontrol.
The improvement has led to a price war between the different airlines, which can only mean one thing for travellers: low-cost flights.
Many airlines have increased their flight schedules well into the autumn in order to prolong the season, while eagle-eyed customers can expect to see last minute deals and price reductions throughout September.
The trend was started by Iberia and Air Europa, who offered “the best price offer of the year” for flights throughout Spain and Europe. In addition, low-cost subsidiary Iberia Express announced twenty weekly flights in September between Madrid and Ibiza, compared to the seven previously on offer.
Air Europa has a special offer until September 17 where flights to Spain and the Balearic Islands can be snapped up for just 14 euros each way, while a trip to the Canaries will set customers back 24 euros.
Not to be outdone, aviation giant Ryanair had a massive buy one flight, get one half price sale on September 1 on more than 1,000 routes, while it is currently offering a range of trips from just 14.99 euros. Volotea is offering flights to Europe for 9 euros while Vueling is just slightly more expensive at 17.99 euros.
According to Bank of America, air travel in Europe is now 10 per cent cheaper than in 2019, with most of the airlines offering flexibility in terms of dates and cancellations given the ongoing uncertainty of Covid.
