ARCHIVED - Alert for viper bites: 5 people have already been hospitalised in Burgos
Vipers are coming out in force in Spain for the breeding season, and are closer than ever to human populations
Three people have had to be treated with antidotes and five have been hospitalised for several days after suffering viper bites in the town of Burgos, Spain.
The warm weather has prompted the animals to come out to breed, and some parts of Spain are now feeling plagued by them.
“We are a province with many cases, the most in Spain and probably in Europe,” says Francisco Callado, from the Emergency Department of the Hospital de Burgos.
Walking through the Fuentes Blancas park in the city has become something of an extreme sport because of all the vipers.
They used to be found near rivers, but now due to increased urbanisation and construction work, these snakes nest in open fields near residential areas. Reports have come through from those living in Spain of finding them in parks, under stones, communal areas, gardens and even under the doormats of houses.
