Alhama cracks down on street littering with 18 fines in one month
Alhama de Murcia police have stepped up enforcement against public urination, spitting and illegal dumping

Alhama de Murcia isn't messing around when it comes to keeping its streets clean. Local police have issued 18 fines over the past month targeting people who fail to comply with basic public hygiene rules, showing the town means business about maintaining its community standards.
The enforcement blitz has caught offenders doing everything from littering, depositing waste outside of containers and outside of established hours, urinating in public and spitting in busy areas.
All of these violations fall under the Municipal Ordinance on Street Cleaning and Waste Management, which gives authorities clear powers to tackle antisocial behaviour. The financial consequences are designed to make people think twice before breaking the rules. Fines are split into three categories based on how serious the offense is:
Minor infractions will cost you €90 to €300, while serious violations jump to between €301 and €750. But if you really push boundaries with very serious violations, you're looking at penalties ranging from €751 to €3,000.

What makes the crackdown particularly frustrating for authorities is that residents have plenty of legal options for getting rid of unwanted items. The Town Council runs a free special waste collection service that covers most household disposal needs.
The service handles household goods and bulky items up to 4 units per collection, remains from small prunings limited to 1 bag of 1 cubic metre, as well as debris from small construction sites capped at 1 basket or 25 kg. Getting items collected is as easy as calling 603 566 419.
With free collection available and clearly marked bins throughout the town, there's really no excuse for dumping rubbish inappropriately or worse, using public spaces as toilets. The council's message to residents is straightforward: caring for our environment is a shared responsibility. Simple actions like respecting collection hours, using bins correctly and taking advantage of the free pickup service make a huge difference to community life and how Alhama de Murcia looks to visitors.
