ARCHIVED - Alicante commissions 100,000 euro monument to victims of Covid
The sculpture 'Bocas que vuelan' (mouths that fly) is expected to be installed in Alicante's Plaza de América before Christmas
A lasting memorial to the 3,000 people who have lost their lives to Covid in Alicante province has been commissioned by the Town Hall.
Prior to the summer, the council launched a competition inviting local artists to submit entries for a commemorative monument, and this week, a panel made up of representatives from the city's political parties, professors, an architect and art experts, selected the winning entry out of 14 submissions.
The sculpture, in marble, bronze and steel, is called 'Bocas de vuelan', which means mouths that fly in Spanish, and is the work of artists Natalia Ferro and Carlos Lorenzo, who will be awarded 100,000 euros for the work of art.
Measuring approximately 4.4 metres high, 3.3 metres wide and 1.2 metres deep, the sculpture is made up of a three elements – a stone block, a bronze face and Corten steel metal structure, all weighing a whopping 25 tons.
According to the artists, the union between the stone and the steel "creates a door, which represents the transit".
The monument will be installed in a public space in the city, with the Plaza de América the current favourite spot, before December 15.
