ARCHIVED - Alicante police clean up a 20,000-euro white goods scam
A 59-year-old man has been arrested on the Costa Blanca in connection with the fraudulent sale of domestic appliances
The National Police in Alicante has arrested a 59-year-old Libyan man accused of defrauding a victim out of 20,000 euros through the fictitious sale of around 30 household appliances.
The arrestee allegedly proposed a business deal last August in which the pair would buy the white goods from a German company.
The two men travelled to Germany to close the deal, which is when the accused offered to act as a mediator and handle the negotiations between the company and the complainant.
Once overseas, the victim transferred 20,000 euros to his 'partner' and flew back to Spain to await the goods, which never arrived.
He reported the theft and officers from the Economic Crime Group of the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade of Alicante were quickly able to identify and locate the suspect who was arrested at an industrial estate in Alicante city.
The detainee, who has no police record, has been charged with fraud and is awaiting a trial date.
