ARCHIVED - Alleged rapist of British tourist arrested in Spain 12 months after attack
The UK woman was physically and sexually assaulted while holidaying in Mallorca in 2021
The Spanish National Police have tracked down and arrested the alleged rapist of a British tourist in Palma de Mallorca in September 2021. Thanks to extensive collaboration with the British authorities, and detailed information from the victim, the suspect was eventually caught in Madrid this week, a full year after the crime was reported.
At the time of the assault, the woman filed a complaint with the London Metropolitan Police which was then passed on to UFAM Central through Interpol.
Despite the trauma she endured, the victim was able to roughly describe the area where the attack took place, as well the inside of the house, which her aggressor claimed belonged to his parents. She also remembered his name and told the police that she went to his home as he claimed to only want a friendship with her.
According to the woman’s statement, once they reached the man’s house she was raped and physically assaulted several times. Once she escaped from the property, she confided in a friend from home about what happened and filed a complaint when she returned to the UK.
Meanwhile, in Spain, investigators believed they had identified the perpetrator’s house, which was advertised for rent at the time. The photos posted online matched the victim’s description closely, so an officer called the number, posing as an interested tenant.
The man who answered gave the same name as the one the woman had provided and also introduced himself as the son of the homeowner. A photo of the suspect was sent to the British authorities, and the woman recognised him immediately, despite the fact that he had changed his appearance quite dramatically since the attack.
Finally, after a year-long investigation and close collaboration with UK police, the alleged perpetrator was arrested at his second home in Madrid and will now face the courts on a rape charge.
