ARCHIVED - AlmerÃa government official detained in relation to irregularities purchasing pandemic healthcare supplies
The Guardia Civil investigation could also affect Murcia, Catalunya and the Balearics
Among 11 people detained on Tuesday by the Guardia Civil in connection with alleged irregularities in the purchases by public administrations of pandemic healthcare material is a high-ranking official in the provincial government of Almería, and it is reported that the Guardia operation could also have ramifications in the Region of Murcia.
The man concerned is reportedly Óscar Liria of the Fomento department of the Diputación de Almería, and at the same time similar Guardia interventions are known to have been undertaken in Murcia, Barcelona, Girona, and Palma de Mallorca. This is the first time that a case such as this has been investigated, and it has been coordinated by the instruction courts of Barcelona and the specialized corruption and organized crime squad.
The investigation began early last year and focussed on a known drug trafficking organization in Catalunya, and enquiries have centred on the awarding of supplies contracts to a related company by the Diputación de Almería: it is believed that undisclosed commission was paid to the individual or individuals awarding the contracts.
Sr. Liria has been removed from his position within the Diputación de Almería provincial government whilst investigations are underway.
