ARCHIVED - Almeria increases beach cleaning services after influx of large jellyfish
Bathers on Almería’s beaches alerted the local council to the problem
The local council in the city of Almería has had to increase cleaning services on the El Zapillo beach, after bathers reported several large jellyfish were seen on the beach and in the water close to the shore.
Due to the amount of jellyfish in the water, the yellow flag was raised on the beaches in San Miguel-Las Conchas, Zapillo, El Palmeral and Nueva Almería on Wednesday morning (August 4).
Since then, the cleaning services have been increased and the coastal cleaning boat has intensified its efforts to remove jellyfish from the shoreline.
Although the level of jellyfish occupation was deemed to be “medium-low”, lifeguarding services haven’t restricted bathing further.
Jellyfish, of different shapes and sizes, are a common occurrence in the Mediterranean, especially during the summer months when the water temperature rises and last week, a rare giant jellyfish, of the Rhizostoma Luteum species, was spotted off the coast of Granada.
