ARCHIVED - AlmerÃa fair cancelled due to rising Covid figures
Almería joins the Feria de Málaga which was cancelled last week, as Covid rates across Andalusia cause concern
The Town Hall in Almería has suspended its annual feria, which was scheduled for the second fortnight in August, due to the rise in Covid cases in the provincial capital city over the past few days and weeks.
The incidence rate in the city has risen to 461 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and, from July 22, the Almería Health District is in alert level two, making this district the worst affected in the province of Almería.
Fernández-Pacheco, the Mayor of Almería, has explained that “the negative evolution of the coronavirus pandemic and the increase in cases make the celebration impossible”. However, he also stated that this “doesn’t mean that there won’t be any activities during the second fortnight in August”.
All of the concerts scheduled for August will go ahead, following any necessary anti-Covid restrictions, and the Mayor justified his decision saying “we have been having concerts for months and no new infections have been registered at these events”.
The Town Hall has also decided that fair attractions will be installed in the fairground, as this sector has had no work for several months. However, the attractions and stalls must be distanced and will have pre-established opening times.
Following the regional government’s proposal of stricter anti-Covid restrictions, the capital city of Málaga has also cancelled this year’s fair.
