ARCHIVED - Amazon centre in Corvera gives much needed boost to Murcia countryside
Amazon employees are boosting the economy in some of the more rural areas of the Region of Murcia
The arrival of the Corvera Amazon logistic centre has been felt by the entire Region of Murcia, but the Murcian countryside has been the most benefitted by the online shopping giants’ presence.
The traditional agricultural areas in Corvera, Los Martínez del Puerto, Baños y Mendigo and Fuente Álamo have also seen a large boom in the months since the Amazon building was opened.
Demand for rental properties has increased in the villages and towns surrounding the centre, especially in Corvera, as many of the employees have chosen to live as close to their workplace as possible. Sales in local businesses have also increased, no doubt thanks to the multinational corporation’s workforce.
The opening of the Murcia International Airport back in 2019 has also contributed to the economic prowess in the Murcia countryside in the last few years of course, but the effect of the Amazon centre has been unprecedented in the rural countryside.
Around 550,000 products per day are moved through the 160,000 square metre building, in addition to the 25 million products which are stored there. In the next three years, the Amazon facility is expected to provide jobs for 1,200 people in total, and around 400 employees are already working at the centre.
