ARCHIVED - Andalusia refuses to rule out Covid certificates for leisure activities
The use of vaccine certificates would both “deter and motivate” citizens, according to Andalucía president
The president of Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has not ruled out the use of vaccine certificates to control entry into some establishments and venues, such as bars and restaurants.
Some countries, such as France and Italy, and even some Spanish regions (Galicia and the Canaries) have already enforced this measure in an effort to reduce Covid transmission.
The president explained that, at first, Andalucía was “reluctant” to enforce such measures because the region was at the beginning of the vaccination campaign.
However, now that 75 per cent of the population have had their first dose and 56 per cent have been fully inoculated, he doesn’t want to completely rule out the Covid certificate option.
He added that the measure would have two purposes; a “deterring” function, to help control the pandemic and a “motivational” factor, to encourage people who haven’t been vaccinated yet to go and get their first jab.
Despite Sr Moreno’s willingness to use Covid certificates for recreational purposes, the national Spanish government have positioned themselves against this option, although regional governments can still opt to enforce the measure.
