Annual National Minerals and Fossils Fair in La Unión
Feria de Minerales y Fósiles de La Unión
Minerologists and the general public enjoy an annual event in La Unión
The history of La Unión is inseparable from the geology and mining of the Sierra Minera, and as a consequence of this connection the town is a natural location for the national Minerals and Fossils fair to be held.
The event takes place every Holy Week between Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday, and during these few days mineral and fossil enthusiasts from the whole of the country (and some from even further afield) converge on La Unión to admire rocks from all over the globe. Some exhibits come from even further away: meteorites are also included!
The fair is held in the Antiguo Mercado Público and admission is free of charge, making it attractive not only to experts but also to curious onlookers, of whom there are plenty. At the official closing ceremony on Easter Sunday prizes are awarded for the best stand, the best mineral and the best mineral from the Sierra Minera, and a draw is held with the prize being one of the specimens on display at the event.
Generally, opening times are from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 15.00 to 21.00.
Location: The normal venue is the Antiguo Mercado Público, the former public marketplace in La Union.
There is plenty of parking for the public marketplace in la Unión just across the railway track, and in the car park for the Parque Minero mining museum. Click for old public Marketplace, La Unión
