ARCHIVED - Anti-mosquito treatments every 15 days until September in Orihuela
Rain in the province of Alicante this spring has created favourable breeding conditions for mosquitos
Following a fairly wet spring, the environmental department of Orihuela council, in collaboration with the company Mosquitos CTL, has announced that it will intensify its programme of anti-larval and anti-mosquito treatments to try and limit the presence of mosquitos across the municipality.
The moderate temperatures this year, allied with the rain, are creating ideal breeding conditions for mosquitos and have helped to shorten the biological cycle this spring, encouraging a larger quantity of larvae to hatch in a short space of time.
The council has extended its treatment cycle within areas with recurring water stagnation potential, particularly along the Segura river. Areas in which adult mosquitoes are habitually present will also be treated, as they affect several urban areas, along with water collectors in urban streets.
The preventative treatments will be employed every 15 days until September, as well as on other occasions when it is deemed necessary should the public report the presence of mosquitos.
The environmental department of the town hall has set-up a dedicated email address (medioambiente@orihuela.es), through which citizens can report specific mosquito-related issues.
The department has also specifically requested that residents play an active part in trying to prevent the proliferation of mosquitos this summer by paying particular attention to their own surroundings and attempting to limit the formation of any stagnant water in which mosquito larvae could potentially develop. Special care should be taken to eliminate objects or areas which could be potential breeding grounds for mosquitos on balconies or in patios and gardens, such as saucers beneath plant pots, empty containers, or buckets, and particularly empty swimming pools. Even a plastic bag lying beneath a bush can hold sufficient water for a mosquito to breed.
As is normal, the head of the environmental department in the Town Hall has also asked for greater collaboration from the regional government to assist with the cost of increasing the level of spraying, stating that the regional government in Valencia only contributed 700 euros towards the cost of the campaign this season, while the provincial council in Alicante made a contribution of 18,000 euros.
The rest of the cost, which is close to 71,775 euros, will be provided by the Town Hall in Orihuela.
