ARCHIVED - Granada man dies from wasp sting
Allergies to wasp stings can cause death in just 30 minutes
A 50-year-old man died on Monday afternoon in Montillana, in the north of the province of Granada, after being stung by a wasp.
Medical sources report that the man was allergic to the sting of wasps and that staff were dispatched immediately from Iznalloz to the scene. However, Guardia Civil officers who also rushed to the emergency report that he had suffered an “anaphylactic shock” (a severe allergic reaction) and all of their efforts to revive the victim, who leaves a widow and two daughters, were in vain.
All of the indications are that the insect which caused his death was not an Asian predator wasp but a member of the “common” wasp species, but for those with allergies to the stings of wasps and bees the reaction is so swift that death can occur within 30 minutes.
