ARCHIVED - Seismic movement continues in Alicante with seven earthquakes in four days
The latest tremor off the Costa Blanca coast registered 2.0 on the Richter scale
Seven earthquakes have been registered in or off the coast of Alicante in four days with the latest detected at 4.46am on Thursday morning (September 2), measuring 2.0 on the Richter scale.
The tremor occurred in the Mediterranean Sea, 49km from the Alicante coast, at a depth of 8,000 metres, according to the National Geographic Institute.
The seismic activity follows two minor earthquakes which took place inland in the municipalities of Iba and Torremanzanas on Monday night (August 30) and early hours of Tuesday morning, with a magnitude of 1.5 (11,000 metres deep) and 1.6 (10,000 metres) respectively.
During the same period, four quakes were registered off the coast of Alicante, with the first three tremors occurring within 15 minutes of each other, the largest of which reached 2.8 of the Richter scale.
The movement was reportedly related to the South Alborian series of seismic tremors, where 72 earthquakes of different magnitudes were recorded in 24 hours.
In Alicante alone, there have now been 51 earthquakes so far this year.
