ARCHIVED - UK citizens banned from travelling through France to Spain
Eurotunnel has issued an urgent warning following French travel rules update
People travelling from the UK to Spain and other European countries have hit yet another roadblock this week as Eurotunnel issued an urgent announcement on Wednesday December 29 informing passengers that British citizens who live in the EU cannot travel through France by car.
The notice, which was posted on the Eurotunnel’s website and Twitter account, stated that:
“Following a French Government decision, on 28/12/2021, unless they hold French residency, British citizens are now considered 3rd country citizens and can no longer transit France by road to reach their country of residence in the EU”.
The company said the decision was made by the French government yesterday, even though no announcement appears to have been made by officials in Paris, and the confusion surrounding the matter has been compounded by the French Interior Ministry’s claim that Eurotunnel officials are wrong, despite several reports that UK citizens have been turned back at the border.
France already tightened up its borders on December 18 to stem the spread of the Omicron variant, and put a ban on all travel from the UK except for those who can prove “compelling reasons”.
All those wishing to travel from the UK to France, regardless of their vaccination status, will need to prove at the border that their trip is essential and provide the appropriate proof. French nationals, as well as residents in France, are exempt.
The full list of what constitutes essential travel can be found on the French Home Office website.
Until now, French guidelines indicated that UK citizens who are resident in another EU country, as well as their partners and children, could travel through France once they are able to show official proof of their residency status.
The latest restriction does not apply to Britons living in France or those who hold an EU passport.
