ARCHIVED - Cieza goes back to the Middle Ages to rediscover its past
Muslims Christians and Jews lived peacefully side by side in Cieza in the Middle Ages
Making use of its Muslim past, the town of Cieza is collaborating with the International University of the Sea in Cartagena to organize a course in September entitled The Landscape of Murcia in the Middle Ages.
The course will concern all aspects of daily life in Murcia during this period, including the religion, customs and economic activities of all the cultural groups concerned. The main aim is to compare and contrast this model of society with the present day, and taking part will be teachers and professors from the University of Murcia, the archaeologist Juan Antonio Ramírez Águila and Joaquín Salmerón, the director of the Museo Arqueológico de Cieza.
Among the subjects studied will be wildlife and flora in the Middle Ages, the landscape of Murcia as it was described by Muslim sources, and Islamic burial grounds in the Region of Murcia. The academic program will be complemented by excursions to Yecla and the old town of Hisn Siyâsa, as well as guided tours of the exhibition rooms in the Museo Arqueológico de Mergelina y de Siyâsa.
The course ( in Spanish) is being run from 16h to 19th September, and enrolment is open until 9th September.
