August 10 Almeria town near Murcia border hosts Bronze Age event
Journey back in time to the Bronze Age this August!
The town of Antas in Almería, close to Vera and Cuevas de Almanzora and just a hop across the border from Águilas and Puerto Lumbreras in Murcia, is being transported back in time to the Bronze Age this August with its Historical Recreation of El Argar event.This special recreation will be on Saturday August 10 and aims to show visitors the life and customs of the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula 4,000 years ago.
Hundreds of local people from the town, which has a population of just 3,400, will dress up in the clothes worn at the time to man stalls and carry out workshops to explain and exhibit the way of life of people who lived in the Bronze Age.
The culture of El Argar is one of the fundamental pillars of the Bronze Age in the Iberian Peninsula, and stood out for its advanced social organisation, its notable technological development and its sophisticated funerary practices. This is the second year that Antas has held this historical re-enactment to honour this culture born in the province of Almería.
“It is, without a doubt, the most awaited cultural event in the municipality,” said the Mayor of Antas, Pedro Ridao Zamora. “In the first edition we received more than 800 culture and history enthusiasts from all over Spain. This year we are sure that we will exceed all these expectations.”
Free events
There will be a market typical of the era selling handmade products, as well as workshops to explain to children the ways of life and the type of work carried out during the period using clay, esparto grass, tapestries, cave paintings and plants. There will also be an exhibition of birds of prey and archery, and the sale of handmade jewellery and mead.
You can also see exhibitions of material from the period, such as clothing, utensils, jewellery, footwear and weapons, and a games library will be set up where you can try your hand at playing typical games of the period. This area will also have a bar and will be open to the public. Access to the market and participation in all the workshops will be free and open from 5.30pm to 9.30pm on August 10, 2024.
Paid events
Additionally, visitors can pay to learn a bit more about the daily life of El Argar settlers with scenes of agriculture, livestock farming, hunting, milling, the tanning of skins, work with esparto grass, funeral rites, metal smelting and even a mock battle with a rival village.
There is a small cost for entrance to these as you have to book in a time slot for one of the six shows – at 6pm, 6.30pm, 7pm, 7.30pm, 8pm and 8.30pm.
The price for adults is 5 euros and it costs 3 euros for children from 4 to 12 years old. Children under the age of 3 go free.
