August 9 Free dramatized visit to the esparto grass museum of Aguilas
Experience the life of esparto grass harvesters and weavers in Águilas in centuries gone by
Following the success of the dramatized guided tours of the museums of Águilas which were introduced last summer, a second tour in a similar vein has been created for July and August 2024, focussing on the Esparto Grass Museum in the Molino de Sagrera windmill, on top of one of the hills in the old town.
The tours are being held on every Friday of the month of August, taking participants back to the time when, prior to the arrival of the railway and iron ore exports in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, esparto grass was the pillar of the local economy: at one point, Águilas was one of the most important esparto centres in the world, and by some distance the most important in Spain.
The dramatized tour shows what life was like for those involved in the industry and starts at 19.30 at the tourist information office, lasting approximately 90 minutes. Due to the need to climb the hill this tour is not appropriate for those of limited mobility.
Online reservations can be made here.
When visiting Águilas your first port of call should be the local tourist office (click here for map, telephone 968 493285, email turismo@aguilas.es).
