ARCHIVED - Barcelona man dies after being shot with taser
The victim later died in a Barcelona hospital having suffered a cardiac arrest
A Barcelona man has died after police used a taser to subdue him following reports that he was threatening his family with knives. The alert was raised by the deceased’s relatives on November 26 and Mossos d'Esquadra officers were forced to access the victim’s home in Badalona via a neighbour since he had barricaded to the door to his own house. Once police were inside, the man “did not calm down” and officers used a taser pistol to restrain him.
According to official sources, the use of the stun gun was carried out correctly according to protocol, but the man was rushed to hospital a short time later where he died from a cardiac arrest.
It has been suggested that the individual suffered from schizophrenia and may have been in the middle of a psychotic break when the tragic events unfolded.
A post mortem will be carried out to establish if the death was caused by the taser.
The use of electric taser guns was approved by the Interior Committee of the Parliament of Catalonia in July 2016 in cases where there is “a high risk” to others, and more than 200 local police forces now use the tool.
