ARCHIVED - Beachgoers disgusted as drunk woman tries to drown dog in Mallorca
The Mallorca woman was spotted earlier beating the dog in the street

A pleasant day at the beach turned into a true nightmare for hundreds of people in Mallorca as they watched in horror when a woman who appeared to be drunk attempted to drown a young dog in the sea at Illetas, just six miles southwest of the island’s capital, Palma.
According to official reports, the owner of the dog left her with a friend when she had to work. Unfortunately, said friend had to attend a hospital appointment, during which time his partner decided to take the pooch, named Laika, for a walk. Locals reported that the woman began to beat the dog in the street for no apparent reason and ignored them when they shouted at her to stop.
Instead, she headed for Illetas beach, which was thronged with holidaymakers at the time, dragged Laika into the water and tried to drown her. Outraged beachgoers were quick to intervene and saved the dog before calling the police.
Witnesses told officers that the woman was under the influence of alcohol and she was arrested on the spot for committing an alleged offence of animal abuse, which carries stiff penalties since the Animal Protection Law in Spain was revamped on August 1.
Laika’s owner was furious when police informed her about what had happened and insists that the woman “has to pay” for what she did.
She said: "How can you beat such a small, loving animal for pleasure? I will go all the way."
She added: "It is not enough that she has spent a night in the cells. She has to pay for what she has done."
The investigation, which was initially being carried out by Calvia Local Police, has been handed over to the Guardia Civil.
