ARCHIVED - Benidorm police remove dozens of gas cylinders from roof terrace amid explosion fears
Concerned residents alerted police in the Marina Baixa town to 95 butane cylinders left in direct sunlight
The National Police in Benidorm has ordered the removal of 95 butane gas cylinders which were being stored on the roof terrace of a block of rented flats in the centre of the town and "in danger of exploding".
Worried neighbours living in adjoining buildings contacted the police after noticing the number of gas bottles being stored in direct sunlight and "without necessary safety precautions" was growing on a daily basis.
Only 15 of the cylinders were found to be empty and two people have been charged with a "crime posing a catastrophic risk".
In a statement, police said "gas in these containers must be kept at a suitable temperature, in an area not exposed to direct sunlight because, at extreme temperatures there is a real danger of explosion".
The National Police has notified the Territorial Industry Service of Alicante, which will be responsible for monitoring the storage of gas cylinders at the property in the future.
Meanwhile, the two individuals are expected to appear before Benidorm Court of Instruction this week.
