ARCHIVED - Booster jabs for those vaccinated with Janssen from November 15
1.97 million people in Spain have received a single dose of Janssen's Covid vaccine
As third booster jabs are rolled out to the elderly in residential homes and 'high-risk' groups across many regions in Spain, the Ministry of Health and autonomous communities have now agreed the additional vaccine will be administered to those vaccinated with the single-dose Janssen immunisation.
This means that from November 15 onwards, the 1.97 million people in Spain who received a Janssen jab will be offered a second dose of Pfizer or Moderna.
According to the Public Health Commission, which met on Tuesday October 26, the booster dose will be administered at least three months after the initial vaccine, prioritising the groups identified in the National Vaccination Strategy, starting with the most vulnerable groups.
Whilst each region of Spain has been managing their vaccination campaigns independently, they are now "united" in achieving two main objectives: firstly, administering a booster dose to people over 70 years of age at the same time as the flu vaccine, once all "high risk" and people living in residential homes have received theirs; and, secondly, offering a third booster jab to almost two million people immunised with Janssen.
The move is somewhat of a U-turn for the Ministry of Health, which insisted that Spain was in no immediate rush to roll out the extra jab to those over the age of 18 earlier this month, despite the European Medicines Agency (EMA) giving the green light to countries wishing to do so.
