British tourists smash spending records in Murcia
International holidaymakers shelled out an incredible 367.5 million in the Region of Murcia during the first quarter of 2024
The Region of Murcia registered an unprecedented surge in foreign tourism during the first four months of this year. Holidaymaker spending shot up all across Spain during the first quarter of 2024, and Murcia was the fourth fastest growing area for tourist spending in the country after Castilla-La Mancha, Cantabria and Galicia.
Tourists from abroad spent a staggering 367.5 million euros in the Region of Murcia between January and April, according to the Egatur Survey of the National Institute of Statistics (INE). That’s 29.6% more than the 283.6 million that visitors doled out during the same period last year.
In these first four months of the year, 279,017 international travellers landed in Murcia, a figure 12.2% higher than in 2023. What’s more, each visitor stayed an average of 13.07 days, which is way higher than the national average of just 7.55 days.
Continuing the trend of recent years, the UK was the largest source of international tourism in the Region – 75,362 holidaymakers arrived from Britain in the first quarter, which is an incredible 27% of the total.
The British are followed at quite a distance by France (17.3%) and the Nordic countries (10.4%). Belgium and the Netherlands round up the top five, sending 26,481 and 21,628 holidaymakers, respectively.
April data
As per the survey findings, Murcia experienced another peak in international tourist arrivals in April 2024, registering 110,914 visitors versus 93,528 in April 2023, translating to an impressive 18.6% uptick. This is well above the average Spanish increase of 8.3%.
Overall, foreign visitors to the Region of Murcia spent a whopping 147.7 million euros during the month of April alone, 39.1% more than the figure registered in the same month of 2023 and a rate of growth that triples that of the Spanish average (13.1%).
