ARCHIVED - British variant accounts for 60 per cent of Covid cases in Navarra
The Kent variant is dominant but has not led to increased pressure on the regional health service
Spain’s Ministry of Health has reported this week that the “British variant” of Covid-19 is rapidly becoming the dominant strain in this country, and in some regions has already reached that level of prevalence.
In the northern region of Navarra, for example, the government reports that in 60 per cent of samples analysed the British (or Kent) strain has been identified, and the regional Health minister, Santos Induráin, comments that the mutation continues to grow in prevalence. However, she also adds that at present the presence of the B.1.1.7 has not been accompanied by any significant increase in the rate of contagion, and that as a result the increased pressure on the regional health service which had been feared has not materialized, at least for the time being.
