ARCHIVED - Butane prices in Spain skyrocket and approach historical record
The cost of a cylinder of butane gas in Spain has increased by 4 euros since November 2020
As electricity, petrol and diesel prices continue to skyrocket, there is yet more bad news for homeowners in Spain as the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has reported that the cost of a cylinder of butane has come very close to its historical maximum set between 2013 and 2015, when a single bottle cost 17.50 euros.
The price of butane has been steadily rising since November 2020, and as of Tuesday September 21 a canister costs a whopping 16.12 euros, four euros more than a year ago.
In 2015, the new butane cylinder pricing system was adopted in Spain. Since then, its cost has undergone very notable variations, but prices followed an annual cycle, tending to rise in winter and fall during summer. However, nothing to date has been comparable to what is occurring in 2021, with six consecutive price hikes, precisely at the time when consumers are spending more than ever on fuel and electricity. In addition, the usual decrease wasn’t observed this summer, and experts predict another large increase at the next bimonthly review in October.
The price hike applies to the traditional 12.5 kilo butane cylinders, and the OCU has recommended that families with economic difficulties check if they are entitled to the electricity social bonus. The organisation has estimated that around 1.2 million households who are eligible for this aid aren’t claiming it, though it could substantially reduce their bills.
