ARCHIVED - Cadiz mayor: we do not want to be Magaluf or full of drunken British tourists
“Our superpower is hospitality,” said Mayor Kichi while snubbing stag parties
The city of Cádiz made its position abundantly clear yesterday when outlining the Strategic Tourism Plan, after Mayor José María González stated that “Cádiz does not want to be Magaluf or a city full of drunken British tourists or where stag parties come”.
The mayor, affectionately known to locals as ‘Kichi’, was setting out a “road map” for the city’s tourism plan from now until 2025 that relies on “a model of sustainable, accessible and identity-based tourism”.
This includes a focus on sustainability, digitalisation, energy efficiency and equality, plus a limit on short-term tourist accommodation, which reduce the feeling of being in a friendly neighbourhood.
“Tourists come to this city looking for purity and the idiosyncrasy of the people of Cádiz,” said Mayor Kichi (pictured, left). “Our superpower is hospitality, and it’s something that we must take care of so that it benefits the city.”
In his comments, the mayor definitively stated that he didn’t want his city to be like Magaluf, the holiday resort on the island of Majorca in Spain’s Balearic Islands. While Magaluf has a reputation as a party town for foreign teenagers, stereotypically Brits, overseas tourists are an important target market for Cádiz’s tourist sector.
This year, the province of Cádiz received more than 100,000 British tourists for the first time in a decade, and each one spends an average of 71 euros per day when they visit the area on holiday. Given this, Mayor Kichi would be wise to measure his remarks carefully to avoid upsetting potential holidaymakers who might be put off by his tarring of a certain audience segment with the same brush.
