ARCHIVED - Calls for Madrid-bound trains from Murcia to be moved to Alcantarilla or Nonduermas stations
Railway support platforms propose moving trains that depart from Archena station closer to Murcia
The Monitoring Commission for Sustainable Mobility and Railway Infrastructure in the Region of Murcia met with the local government this week to once again demand that either the Alcantarilla or Nonduermas train stations be used as an alternative to Archena.
Since the end of February, the section of railway line between Murcia and Alcantarilla has been closed, and passengers wishing to travel to Madrid from the Region are forced to get a bus to Archena and then change trains at the Albacete station, greatly lengthening the time and hassle of the journey.
The disruption is in aid of the new High Speed line currently under construction that won’t be completed for up to three years, and although Renfe has put on several bus services to bridge the gap, railway support platforms have been arguing for the use of the other two stations, which are closer to Murcia, for several months.
To this end, the Monitoring Commission explained at Monday’s meeting that "the replacement of the Archena station by the Nonduermas or Alcantarilla station is supported by an informal study prepared a few days ago, which highlights the manifest feasibility of this proposal”.
He added that the regional government hasn’t yet given any concrete reasons as to why Archena was chosen above the other two stations.
Government minister José Vélez cautiously confirmed this week that, all going to plan, the AVE should arrive in Murcia “by the end of this year or the beginning of 2023,” while the High Speed Cartagena line is scheduled for within two or three years.
