ARCHIVED - Camposol refuse containers fall foul of thoughtlessness
Two refuse containers destroyed by ash dumped while still hot enough to ignite rubbish
Mazarrón Council ask for a little forethought when disposing of ash residue from log fires or barbecues after two refuse containers were destroyed by ash dumped into them which was still hot enough to ignite the contents of the container causing a fire hot enough to melt the container itself.
The fire brigade has been called out to deal with refuse bin fires in the Camposol development caused by the residue of ash, most probably from log fires or burners being dumped into the plastic refuse containers at two locations, one on Sector C and one on Sector D. While this is not being treated as deliberate as has occurred recently in Cartagena, accidental rubbish bin fires do happen from time to time but are still avoidable with a little care and consideration.
It should be remembered that ash and embers from a log burner can, in certain circumstances remain hot for up to 72 hours (3 days) as the ash acts as an insulator for the embers.
The manager of Bahía de Mazarrón Ingeniería Urbana, the concern that control Mazarrón Council refuse collection, commented after removing the remnants of the plastic containers that “the destruction of the bins was wholly avoidable just by checking that the ashes had cooled down and not only is it an inconvenience replacing the bins, they also cost Mazarrón Council 350 euros each”.
Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol, Silvana Buxton has asked for “a little forethought when disposing of the ash from fires and log burners, check to make sure the ash is cold and if not leave them to cool down enough for disposal even if it takes a few days”.
Volunteers from the D Sector Gardening group and the 2025 Group are currently carrying out joint projects to smarten up the refuse and recycling areas around that Sector.
