ARCHIVED - Cartagena cracks down on unlicensed chiringuito concerts
Beach bars holding unauthorised gigs have been given a warning to stop, or face being shut down
The City Council of Cartagena is sending an official reminder to its chiringuito beach bars that concerts are not authorised in these locales.
Many popular chiringuitos along the Cartagena coastline and the Mar Menor who frequently advertise gigs and performances on their social networks have received a stern warning from the authorities for such unauthorised actions.
Gigs and amateur concerts are a common way for the chiringuitos to drum up business and attract customers outside of daytime hours when people are on the beach.
However, municipal sources have pointed out that the Coastal Demarcation service ‘Costas’ could even revoke the operating licences of any beach bars for non-compliance with the conditions under which they were awarded.
In the official notice sent as a warning, the City Hall recalls that “concerts and other live performances are not permitted as they exceed the natural uses of this type of facility and do not meet the conditions indicated in art. 61 of Royal Decree 876/2014, of 10 October, which approves the General Coastal Regulations.”
By sending out this warning note, Cartagena hopes to avoid the need to revoke any licences, which are valid until 2024 and which were controversially delayed in being issued this year.
Last year, the alleged lack of supervision of the sanctions against the chiringuitos that broke the rules led to an investigation being opened by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, although that was eventually shelved.
