The Oyster Initiative in Murcia's Mar Menor is promoted by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC)
Cartagena this week hosted a meeting focused on the recovery of the Mar Menor through the filtering effect of oysters, a project promoted by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) and eight experts from universities across Spain, all coordinated by the Murcia Oceanographic Centre. The RemediOS conference, held at El Museo del Teatro Romano on Thursday September 15 and attended by aquatic professionals from around the world, was part of the Oyster Initiative that focuses on the elimination of nutrients in the lagoon thanks to the filtering effect of the 'Ostrea edulis' species. The general objective of the initiative is to promote the use of exclusively aquatic molluscs in bioremediation - a process where biological organisms are used to remove or neutralise an environmental pollutant by metabolic process in degraded ecosystems. The RemediOS project has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the Pleamar programme, co-financed by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces FEMP, as well as the collaboration of the Estrella de Levante Foundation. You might like: Aguilas launches Coastal Eco-school campaign to educate children about caring for the environmentImage: Ayuntamiento de Cartagena
