ARCHIVED - Cartagena steps up beach cleaning but still no chiringuito beach bars open
No cold refreshments on sale at Cartagena beaches as summer weather arrives
The warm weather over the weekend in the Costa Cálida, when temperatures in inland Murcia climbed well above 30 degrees, saw hundreds of people flock to the beach all along the coastline, and coincided in Cartagena with the news that beach cleaning efforts are to be redoubled as the summer season gets under way.
Announcing the stepping up of cleaning, Deputy Mayoress Noelia Arroyo explained that efforts would be focussed first on the southern end of the Mar Menor before extending to the west of the municipality, with three teams beginning work in El Carmolí, Los Nietos, Islas Menores and Mar de Cristal.
However, residents on the coast are complaining that little has been done to improve the condition of the beaches this spring, and many of those who ventured down to the sand were upset to realize that the Town Hall has still not granted licences this summer to the “chiringuito” beach bars which usually open in time for the Easter holidays.
None of which, it has to be said, detracted from the enjoyment of youngsters as they enjoyed their first swim of 2021 in the glorious sunshine!
