Casa Palacio Viuda de Molina Cartagena
The Palacio Molina venue in Cartagena
The Casa Palacio Viuda de Molina was formerly the residence of the Molina family and is located in the old centre of Cartagena, looking out onto Calle Jara to the front and Calle Honda to the rear.
The building is a sober combination of the baroque and neo-classical styles of the 18th and 19th centuries, and was originally a family residence. The most striking features of the façade are the stone main doorway and the wrought iron balcony rails outside the French windows. Inside there was a ballroom, a large library and an important collection of works of art, but all of these have now disappeared.
The Palacio Molina is proud to have played host to the King of Spain for a night. The year was 1923, when Alfonso XIII, grandfather of Juan Carlos I, visited Cartagena with his wife, Queen Victoria Eugenia de Battenberg, one of Queen Victorias many grandchildren. During his visit to the city he officially unveiled the monument to the Héroes de Cavite y Santiago de Cuba and the Real Club de Regatas, and stayed in the Palacio Molina.
The palace is now used as a cultural centre and exhibition space, hosting a constantly changing programme of exhibitions.
