ARCHIVED - CehegÃn welcomes new Canine Unit to the local police force
The new members of the force will mainly be used in drug control operations, but will also serve in an educational role
The Policía Local in Cehegín has proudly presented its new Canine Unit with the objective of improving security and crime prevention in the municipality, focusing particularly on refining the control of drug trafficking in the area.
At the moment, the police have one dog which is fully trained in security methods, another dog currently undergoing training and a third joining the force soon.
Three police officers from the Policía Local are qualified to carry out the canine training, with the help of two experts.
Once the training is complete, the dogs will be able to detect narcotics and other illegal substances in both police controls and in other situations, including in parks and in gardens. They will also serve as an added defence for the officers.
The main aim of the new Canine Unit is to improve drug control in open spaces and increase social awareness amongst residents.
However, this unit will not only carry out preventative work with the police officers, but will also serve an educational purpose, as the dogs will be taken to demonstrations and to local schools to raise awareness amongst young people about the dangers, and consequences of, drug use.
