ARCHIVED - CHS to install rubbish collecting retention elements along the Segura river in the Vega Baja
This project will minimize solid residuals and make the river much cleaner as it passes through the province of Alicante
The Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS), which manages the natural waterways and water supply of the Alicante province, has approved a new project to retain solid substances in irrigation ditches and other areas of the Vega Baja which should be completed within three months.
In addition, the CHS has also begun the preparation of the necessary documentation to use an electric line from the automatic grid in Guardamar, which is necessary for the installation of the retention elements.
This new project will eliminate, or at least greatly reduce, the amount of solid floating objects in the Guardamar barrier, in order to achieve a cleaner river, which should then gradually return to its natural state.
The main objective is to avoid solid waste and other objects reaching the river by removing them from irrigation ditches before they reach the main body of the river and moving them to an authorized landfill.
As well as withdrawing these solid residuals from the ditches and channels, there will be a floating barrier with an automatic gate in Guardamar, which will remove all solid elements that reach the gate, rather than the current system, which traps floating waste at Guardamar.
Although the system in use at the moment does prevent waste collected at the current floating barriers from continuing down the river, it is unsightly and could be improved considerably by this new system which auto-collects and removes the floating rubbish accumulated.
