ARCHIVED - Cleaning work begins on Cartagena ramblas as Gota Fria season looms
Council workers have cleared over 1km of waterways in preparation for rainy season floods
Work is once again underway to clean the rambla watercourses and drain covers in Cartagena city in preparation for the rainy season and the Gota Fría storms expected in the coming weeks.
Heavy rainfall forecast in the North and Northwest of Murcia province from September 1 signals the start of a series of Gota Fría weather fronts that can lead to flooding in Cartagena and surrounding areas every autumn. The floods regularly cause destruction to property and even result in loss of life, and the annual clearing of obstructions to the drainage system and weeds in the waterways that run through the city are an important part of helping to relieve water flow.
Workers for the city council, armed with diggers, excavators and tankers of pressurised water, have already started clearing the Benipila rambla, Calle Pajarita and Camino del Sifón, and are set to start on the Canteras rambla afterwards.
